sea urchins at home

The fish market is selling sea urchins again. I put them in Atlantic Ocean water (from Brighton Beach) and watched tube feet emerge almost immediately once the creatures were fully covered under water.

How can it be that humans share over 7,000 genes with them? That number is greater than the amount we share with fruit flies and worms.
